Just before releasing their new song, All Time Low started posting photos of a few snippets of the music video which caused a wave of panic among their Hustler fans. Weeks before, the band decided to post a link that directs the viewers to a mysterious site displaying their logo of an eye inside a spade, which then the interactive buttons change each week that passed. Then came the 17th day of February where "Dirty Laundry"'s music video was first posted on the band's website.
First thing about the music video is that the whole five minutes display a very aesthetic look, from the car that initially appeared to the neon sign that was shaped like the band's logo. Dirty laundry was truly depicted in the music video wherein Alex Gaskarth, the lead vocalist of the band, stared at his laundry in the washing machine for the first few moments of the video. Some people might focus on the new "genre" the band explored on this song, however, All Time Low did not only amazed their fans through the song but also through the video.
Dirty Laundry is more than just Alex staring at his clothes being washed. In fact, everything is a metaphor in the music video. The whole time he was spacing out tells us he is reminiscing about his life, his past. Moreover, as you continue to watch the video, you will learn how his clothes are more than just a dirty laundry - because they symbolize his life. Okay, that seems to deep, but let's take a look at each moment in the video.
The girl clad in leather jacket and bold red lipstick came first, seducing Alex as he just stood there staring at nothing while she continues to grasp his shirt and crumpling them in the process of doing so. This kind of implies the initial bother or short impact of relationships in his life. Moving on, the next came the rowdy friends who stripped Alex off of his flannel and wrecked his white shirt which gives the viewers an idea that these peers were a bad influence. Take note of the outerwear being taken off. Surprisingly, the third person to appear was a bride who looks a lot like Alex's wife, Lisa. The bride cuts through his white shirt and proceeds to take the clothing off him. In some way, this kind of represents how having that special someone strips you off until you're naked, not physically though, more like emotionally. This part depicts how one shares their vulnerabilities to their other half. Then came the part where a lad presented him new clothes and an elderly couple went to Alex to clothe him with the new shirts. This part is very symbolic in a way that it gives the viewers the idea that no matter how messed up you become, your parents would always care for you and nurse you back until you are okay. The last part was when Jack Barakat, the lead guitarist of the band, puts on Alex a new denim jacket which somehow represented that the band further helped him. The outerwear that kind of represents "security" in his life was taken off from him when he was with those bad influences but was returned back by his fellow band members.
All throughout the video, people might think the focus is Alex but really, it is the dirty laundry, the clothes that have been torn, cut and washed that reflected the journey of their lives. Dirty Laundry is their past. The music video was attached with a letter from Alex and somewhere, it stated that the song was all about looking back and reminiscing the band's past. From surviving various relationships, having toxic friends, meeting their present girlfriends / fiancees / wife, and then starting anew, All Time Low clearly presented their journey as a band through this music video.
"Dirty laundry looks good on you," meaning your past is something you should not be ashamed of.
Watch the music video.
