The Beauty of "Beauty and the Beast"

Various teasers released before the movie made me think that I was prepared for the movie itself. But I was wrong. Directed by Bill Condon, Beauty and the Beast did wonders on depicting a realistic form of its animated version. To sum it up, the movie is all about this bookworm who ended up falling in love with a beast all because of a rose.

The movie had me bursting with happiness then ripping my heart the next minute. The plot of the movie was similar to the animated version of it; however, a few twists were also added that made the movie unique. In some way, this version of Beauty and the Beast filled some gaps and questions on Belle's life because of the added plots.

Emma Watson as Belle made the movie more interesting. I applaud the casting director for assembling a great cast for the movie. Emma Watson was the perfect fit for Belle's character and so was Luke Evans with Gaston. Luke Evans did a remarkable job in playing a narcissistic antagonist. His smirks and deep voice were his character's highlights.

Everything was aesthetically pleasing, from the time the all too familiar castle started up on the screen to the rolling of credits. Majority of the movie revolves around this huge castle where the Beast lives and let me describe it in one word - golden. Each and every object you could lay your eyes on is intricately designed with gold. Even the characters shines with the color. However, outside the castle walls, everything was either hues of pure whites of snow or light browns and greens of the village.

The movie also did a great job in portraying a rich French culture. The way people dress and speak makes you think you were in the past century. It was also depicted on the type of Belle and the Beast's dances.

Moreover, Beauty and the Beast depicted several social illnesses such as discrimination over gender and looks. We all know how Gaston wanted to marry Belle because of her beauty and the movie further highlighted sexism by mentioning in his lines how Belle should only concern herself of bearing a child and not books. Belle was also scolded in the movie for teaching a girl how to read. In the latter part of the movie where Gaston was believed by the majority over Maurice, Belle's father, because of his reputation, this made me think of how awfully similar this situation is to the present society.

However, I would rate it 4 out of 5 because some scenes were kind of lacking such as the moments shared between Belle and Beast and also were cliché and expected. Overall, the movie was amazing.

How to Survive Ateneo Senior High

Are you having a hard time digesting the fact that next June you will be entering the threshold of Ateneo for Senior High School? If yes, don’t panic because you are in the right page.

The following are the best life hacks we can give to you;

1. Always wear you proper uniform and don't forget to wear your ID.

You cannot enter the gate without your ID and not wearing your uniform and I'm pretty sure that I don’t have to explain this.

2. Always bring a pen.

You can forget about your paper but never forget the pen. Pen symbolizes how ready a student is. You must be able to cope with the demand of this curriculum--- this school. You cannot do such thing if you are not completely ready to win a battle. These both apply to academics and non-academic activities. Ateneo is a dynamic school and full of surprises and we as a student of this university should be always ready for anything.

3. Learn to love the stairs.

Ateneo is not only a starting road to success but also to fitness. Every morning, you need to conquer and force yourself to climb the stairs in order for you to attend your classes. There is no excuse to it, stairs symbolizes the road to success but most of the time stairs are always annoying. But you need to learn to love it. You gotta.

4. Be friendly.

This is a must. Stop hating other people before missing the chances of meeting amazing personalities. If you think being the talk of the town because of your nasty attitudes and/or being the whistle blower of a certain teenage drama is cool? Well, you have to fix yourself. Ateneo is a community who includes people. We condemn any types of exclusion.

5. Don’t be afraid.

Learn how to speak and at the same time learn when to speak. Ateneans are very outspoken. We are known because of our voices, we always want to say something and as a student you are expected to be the voice of the voiceless. So kid, like Cinderella’s mother once said “Have courage and be kind.”

6. Don’t waste time.

This is very important. Senior High School is a bridge between Junior High and College, so expect the best and the worst. School requirements were never this hard; deadlines were all in the same week and you as an individual should finish everything for you to pass the subject. Yes it’s difficult, but my advice is don’t waste a second. Know your priorities, should I keep doing my PTs ‘till 5AM or sleep?

7. Learn the value of teamwork.

Forget about the Methodological Individualism, you have two years to collaborate with different talents. There is no time for isolating yourself. Explore outside the cave, my child.

8. Always do your best, because I know

If you can do well, make it better and strive for the best. If you are expected to reach a certain level, surpass it.

9. Don’t pressure yourself.

We are no longer after the grades because they are just numbers. The important thing is how could we help other people? Learn to enjoy the ride and earn knowledge from it.

10. Be you.

This is the best I tip I can share, don’t be the other version of you. Remove your mask, embrace the freedom and be real. Fake it until you make it will never give you the thrill. You will miss all the fun.

But after all these tips, it is only you who can tell how to survive Ateneo. Whoever you are and what ever you want to be...do it your way and I just want to welcome you to Ateneo Senior High School.

Many people seem to be too concerned of their body images nowadays because they are getting too caught up with society’s standards and these standards have been causing a variety of effects to the people. These effects are mostly negative and degrading to those who are incapable of making their body image fit the standards of society.

These standards can aid a person in making himself / herself look good, but it is sometimes too much; too much artificiality that people, especially women conform to it in an abusive way. They tend to skip meals or eat meals that aren’t even considered as meals, they inject or drink whatever they can to enlarge or decrease the size of specific parts on their bodies, and they apply too much make-up to make their faces look perfect or flawless.

If you can observe, women nowadays tend to have dark thick brows and they call it, “eyebrows on fleek”. This has become a trend and if you don’t have this type of brows, you’ll end up getting insecure unless you really don’t care or if you have blessed thick brows. Another example would be the “women big breasts and butts are more attractive” issue where people debate that women with smaller breasts and butts are less attractive than women with big ones. Issues like these are getting out of hand for children as young as 9 are already becoming alarmed of their own body image. This is basically the reason why looking “in” has become a requirement to everyone nowadays may you be a child, a teenager, an adult or even an elderly. People tend to be so judgmental and particular when it comes to physical appearances and this generation is composed of these types of people.

They are not aware that these social standards have been one of the major reasons that causes people to have trust issues. People, especially the plus sizes will always think that they are not enough or they are not good looking because they have this type of body image. The ideals of the society are skinny women with large breasts and butts and also muscular men with abs who can flaunt their body without shame.

Such a pity these people are experiencing; they have fooled themselves to do stupid things that they think would make them feel happy and satisfied well in fact they have lead themselves to a situation where they can never be contented with how they look and they have exposed themselves to risks that can endanger their lives.

Body image is our OWN mental perception of our OWN body. It is our OWN body, so why rely on other people’s opinions about it when you know that YOUR body is NOT THEIRS?

Dear 15 year old me, I wish I could have said these things to you before you got hurt, experienced happiness, made mistakes or have done things that you should have not. But alas, the world does not work that way, so I'll just leave this here in hopes of someone can learn from my mistakes.

All people are bad, including yourself. All of us have our dark side no matter how innocent and kind we seem. These parts of us can hurt you and you can never prevent this. However, keep in mind that all people are good, too. Despite the bad things you label a person, you'll always be surprised whenever they show their goodness. And never ever ever focus on somebody's bad side whenever you see them.
Do not live up to anybody's expectations or judgments. They do not control you, nor do you control them. Each of our perspectives are different. So next time somebody says you look ridiculous in that outfit, don't feel ashamed of yourself because someone out there that you might have passed by and saw you might have thought you slayed.
It has always been health over grades. Do not lose sleep over a number that would not matter to you fast forward 20 years because trust me, those line of 90+ numbers listed on a paper wouldn't give you as much happiness than the time you could be spending with your friends or family.
It's never wrong to show affection for the people you love. Okay, I'm not mentioning too much PDA but it's nice to hold your best friend or significant other's hand once in a while. No, it's not lust nor a sin. It's just a way of showing them that they matter to you and you appreciate their existence in a physical way. Do not shy away from physical contact as been taught upon you since you were little because you'll experience in the future how regret and guilt would eat you from the inside.
Do not repress your emotions. It's not called oversharing when you say what you want to say - its called expressing. Going back to number 2, ignore people if they judge what you feel. It's your feelings, not theirs so they don't have the right to validate it or not because they haven't experienced what you've been through.
You are not alone. Mainstream, I know. But it's true. You might feel like everybody's turned their back on you when you're crying in the middle of the night but haven't you thought that they haven't got a clue about what you're going through because you haven't shared anything about yourself to them for the past months? They are thinking when and how to approach you because they might think that because you isolated yourself from them, they thought that they might have done something to upset you. Always, always approach someone, no matter how worse it gets. The real world is not like the movies where somebody immediately saves you out of nowhere. If you need someone, they're just a message or call away.

The Uproar of Feminists on Emma Watson's Vanity Fair cover

After shooting a photo of her wearing a revealing top on Vanity Fair, Emma Watson was lashed out by various people claiming she was being a "hypocrite" declaring herself a feminist when she showed half of her breasts.

A few of them tweeted:

A few days after the ruckus, Emma Watson explained her side in an interview of her upcoming movie, The Beauty and the Beast. According to her, "Feminism is giving women a choice," and not using it to bring others down. Watson claimed how she couldn't understand how "her tits have to do with it," because as she stated, feminism is having the freedom and liberation. Watch the whole interview here:

On the other hand, some of the arguments by people online not only stated how Emma opposed her role as a feminist by her photo but also how she was a hypocrite for criticizing Beyonce on 2014 for her nudity. Many of the netizens, especially Beyonce fans or also known as Beyhives, pointed out how her statements during the interview adds more to her hypocrisy because of the fact that she said otherwise to Beyonce's situation before.

Emma Watson is hypocrite. Now that she is being attacked for the same thing she attacked Beyonce for 5 years ago, it is problem. Girl bye.

In these pictures, she made it clear how she did not "attacked" Beyonce but instead showed how she said there is an empowerment in Beyonce's sexuality. A few people accepted her words, however some still choose to criticize her actions.

Sa kasalukuyan, laganap pa rin ang mga "hate crime" sa mga babae, ang pag-aabuso, pag-haharas, seksismo, paggahasa, pagpatay. Buksan mo ang telebisyon, magbasa ka sa Internet, maglakad-lakad ka sa mga kanto at makikita mo ito. Sasabihin ng mga iba diyan, "Nangyayari rin kaya yan sa mga lalake. Duh." At totoo nga. Hindi ko naman sinasabi na hindi ito nangyayari sa kanila.

Pero kailan ba pinatay ang isang lalaki dahil sa kanilang kalalakihan?

Nangyayari ang mga ito dahil ang kababaihan ay karaniwang naiuugnay sa kahinaan. Dahil mula nang tayo'y ipinanganak, naitanim na sa ating kaisipan na wala tayong lugar sa patriarko na ito kundi maging asawa, katulong, alipin. Dahil kahit ang kapwa nating babae ay sinasabing ang kababaihan ay umiikot lamang sa pagpapabuntis at panganganak.

Mas higit pa tayo sa mga parte ng ating katawan. Tayo ang taga-bigay buhay, pangangalaga, pagmamahal. Pero tayo rin ay mga doktor, abogado, guro, siyentipiko, mangangaso, magsasaka, pinuno, sundalo. Nakarating na tayo sa kalawakan at naging boses na tayo ng lipunan.

Ang kababaihan ay walang kinalaman sa kakayahan. Ang kababaihan ay hindi isang depekto. Ang kababaihan ay nangangailangan ng higit pa sa pagpapaubaya.

Para ito sa lahat ng mga babaeng sinabihan ng, "Babae ka lang." Huwag ka maniwala sa kanila. Babae ka. Hindi ka isang pagkukulang.
